BIO

This work was first presented in 2007 during the group show Daniel López Show at Roebling Hall Gallery in Brooklyn, New York. The exhibition brought together several artists who addressed critical post-dictatorship issues, such as corruption and the concentration of wealth, and took its title from one of the pseudonyms used by Augusto Pinochet to hide money. The Chilean art collective Hoffmann’s House participated by inviting artists based in Chile and New York to draw on forms to apply for checking accounts at Banco de Chile, the institution responsible for transferring money abroad. Seventy-two artists responded to the call intervening the forms with drawings, burn marks, scribbles, and writings. The work, titled after the song New York, New York, popularized by Frank Sinatra, includes both the originals and their duplicates and arranges them randomly, alluding to concepts of fraud and forgery.
Hoffmann’s House, composed by visual artists Rodrigo Vergara and José Pablo Díaz, was founded in 1999 with the acquisition of a prefabricated house, which they used as a mobile gallery. Their artistic, curatorial, and management activities aimed to address and counteract the economic and professional precariousness of artists in Chile.
